Since 1990, the Alumnae/i Fellows program has been established to provide New College Alumnae/i the opportunity to supplement the academic and co-curricular experience of New College students by teaching an Independent Study Project (ISP), a semester-long or half semester-long (mod) course for credit, or leading a not-for-credit workshop or seminar.

The tenure of Alumnae/i fellows spans either January interterm or the Spring semester each academic year. Applicants may apply as often as they wish but will not be awarded an Alumnae/i Fellowship more than twice in three academic years.

Proposals for the 2009 spring semester must be submitted by Friday, August 1, 2008. All proposals will be reviewed by the Alumnae/i Fellows Committee, made up of two appointed alumnae/i, two faculty members appointed by the Provost, one student, and one NCAA staff member. The committee will then send its recommendations to the appropriate Division for its consideration. All Alumnae/i Fellows must be approved as Adjunct Faculty according to the New College Handbook on page 24 http://www.ncf.edu/Provost/PDF/FacHand2007_08.pdf (4.1.3 copied at the bottom of this page). In the New College tradition, the Alumnae/i Fellow will evaluate the work of students in the course through narrative evaluations. Upon final approval by the Division, the Fellow will be notified by acceptance letter and email.

All Alumnae/i Fellows proposals must include:

1. Name, addresses (home, work and e-mail) and phone numbers (home, work and fax) of the candidate(s).
2. Project and Course descriptions should be as detailed as possible and specify the length of time required for completion of the project (non-credit workshop-1 week, ISP-4 weeks, semester course-14 weeks or mod course-7 weeks). Course descriptions should include a preliminary reading list and a draft syllabus indicating topics to be discussed in the course.  A Faculty Recommendation Form completed by a New College faculty member in an appropriate discipline indicating support is required for all applications.
3. Detailed description of qualifications and experience in the topic. A curriculum vitae or resume is required with proposals for academic credit.
4. Project or course budget for all expenses including those requiring NCAA funding. Include transportation costs to and from Sarasota, materials, printing and equipment expenses, local expenses (room, meals, transportation, etc.) Please address any expected professional fees or other compensation required to carry out the project. Also include any information about any possible funding or in kind contributions available from other sources.
5. A list of any New College facilities or equipment necessary for the implementation of the project or course.

4.1.3 Adjunct Faculty Appointments (From New College Faculty Handbook)

From time to time, as deemed appropriate to provide for the teaching of specific courses or other group studies that meet specific curricular needs, the College appoints adjunct faculty. In general, the College does not rely heavily on adjunct appointments. An adjunct faculty member's letter of appointment specifies the course(s) and/or other endeavor(s) to be taught. An adjunct appointment letter is for one semester or less or one January Interterm. Adjunct faculty teach only the activity or activities specified in the appointment letter and do not (unless specified in the letter) offer tutorials, independent reading projects, or the like. Adjunct faculty do not vote in divisional or faculty meetings. They do not sponsor contracts or senior theses/projects, and they do not serve on baccalaureate committees. Because adjuncts are employed for highly specific purposes, such as for the teaching of one course that complements the regular offerings of the faculty, their credentials, while generally of the same level as the regular faculty’s, may be highly specific to the subject matter in question. Thus, while a Juris Doctor or a Master of Public Administration might not qualify as appropriate terminal degrees for regular faculty positions at New College, they may be appropriate for an adjunct appointment.
